Insulin Resistance - Why You Can't Lose the Baby Weight

Introduction

Can't lose the baby weight...and your babies aren't exactly babies anymore?

It's not your fault.

Insulin Resistance During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, women's bodies naturally become somewhat insulin resistant, a state that prevents glucose (sugar) from entering the cells and providing energy. This is considered an adaptation to allow more glucose to go to the fetus. If this becomes too severe, it is called gestational diabetes.

Several weeks or so after birth, insulin sensitivity should return. Women who are diagnosed with gestational diabetes, however, are more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes later in life. This suggests that there is a lingering tendency for blood sugar dysregulation after pregnancy in these women.

Even without a gestational diabetes diagnosis, could it be possible that this dysregulation is present in many women, causing only a minor state of insulin resistance and leading to weight gain and difficulty losing weight?

Pregnancy also usually comes with strong cravings, often for glucose-rich foods which may exacerbate an insulin resistant state.

Weight Loss Resistance

There are many factors that can be involved in weight loss resistance, but insulin is a key hormone that needs to be addressed. A simple blood test including fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin can tell us if you are insulin resistant and how severe it is.

Conclusion

Treatment is not as hard as you might think, that is, the ketogenic diet is not the only way. Focusing on carbohydrate quality, appropriate macro percentages, intermittent fasting, stress management, appropriate exercise, and targeted supplementation are all important for managing blood sugar and insulin levels.

Book in with us to find out if insulin management should be part of your treatment plan, and how to best incorporate the above strategies into your life!
